The Republic of Semenyih

Only when you've left, you realise the food is actually pretty good...

wow...it's been long...

Alright, I can safely say almost no one's reading this place any longer... I never found the will to update the poor ailing republic... Perhaps it's work, or loss of interest... Whatever... It's been too long anyway. Almost 3 months eh... I'd be like restarting one of them ol' junks in Sg Ramal, haha. Well, it's actually been off peak since the last update in July. Yeah, the glory period when auditors can proudly say they went to office and did close to nothing. Well, not really, but nothing substantial. It's the time for training, administrative work, filing, preparations for the next peak, preparations for the upcoming interim, etc. But it sure is nice getting to go home at 6pm, haha. Just can't get too comfy before the next round of sleepless nights of working start.

So, I don't really have much to update... well, actually plenty happened, just that to write 3 months' worth of stuff here is nuts... So yeah, just a reviver shot to this place. And yes, Jeevan, good ol' buddy, if you still read this, April is fine, haha. I should be back from JB by then. Just hope I get to squeeze some time out of there... Should still be within the peak season unfortunately...But nontheless, as I've learnt that in this line of work we're expected to perform near miracles, so, I shall strive to perform as well. Pictures in between are aplenty... I just wonder if I'll ever find the will and determination to post them up, haha. Anyway, I shan't be rambling on further.. till the next time I update this place...no promises on how soon, G'nite :)

quite a bit to write...but no time...

Yeah... I wonder how some people manage to work and blog regularly... I really can't imagine myself in that position... Anyway, quite a bit has happened since the last update. Most notably, going to Daicon 2009 and having my weekends robbed away...

So, Daicon first... Went to Kampar on Friday (can't remember which past one, haha) to look see look see and pick up small boy at the same time. Jon and David came along... David was a last minute decision, because of a last minute ffk on the part of David's wonderful buddies... And like most of my road trips, shit happens. I don't know why... it just does. Ran out of petrol around 2 1/2 km past the Tapah rest stop... So yeah, we had to walk back to the petrol station at the rest stop to get a couple of bottles of petrol. Luckily the sun wasn't out of the clouds so fast...came out when we were around 100m to the station... I know numbers wise, 2 1/2 doesn't sound far, but trust me... it was bad... we realised that when we managed to hitch a ride from a tow truck at the station after catching quite a breather... For the first time, I pumped full after I passed the toll at Tapah, haha. Kampar is well... a nice way to put is, a smaller version of Taiping. More laid back and has all that old world charm... Except for the behemoth that is the UTAR campus and the lake beside it. When they say lake front, they mean lake front... UNiM in comparison, has a puddle sized pond with ducks... They have waterfowl living and nesting there... We just produce better employable grads, hehe :P

Anyway, on to Daicon the next day...quite a letdown unfortunately... there were only what...6 doujin stalls? The line for KKnM (or bf gf shop, translated into Jap) was absolutely crazy... not to mention the prices too... (sorry to all the people who'd buy out there, but I ain't spending RM115 for a t-shirt even though it may have some cool anime print on it). The event just doesn't have the feel that Comic Fiesta or GACC generates...it's just too...quiet. The only attraction was well, Chihara Minori attending, and if you aren't a hardcore fan who'd splash RM250, 150 or 50 to see her, it's pretty much a yawn-worthy event... I look forward to GACC... pity my Sunday there will be cut short due to my blasted estate visit scheduled to begin the next day... Yeah, my main assigment for the year is a plantation company and all their Malaysian estates are in Johor... and it so happens that the third week of August is the only time we can do our estate visit... haih... I hope I don't miss too much...

And yeah, now that ACCA classes have started for me, I just kissed Sat and Sun goodbye... I thought there were 2 classes in a day, but no... 1 class per day... 2 papers means, Sat and Sun both gone... And due to miscommunication from HR, I missed the first 2 classes and entered late for the 3rd one. And, now I'm told I have to re-register myself into Sunway because my company didn't do it... I don't know what to say any longer... I've ran out of curses... and I'll have to inquire with ACCA about my registration status too because they might have f**ked that one up too since I have yet to receive any communication from ACCA... yeah, I hope the staff in charge of this in my company hits his head on the side of a tofu and dies... ish...

G'nite :)

finally feeling like off peak

Yup, finally the feeling called off-peak season has arrived... Work can stop at 6 or 7pm, not so much running around... hell, there are even times when we have nothing to do... Well, unless you're a constant target of seniors and managers, which I think I am... Any damn thing come and look for me... ish... Oh well, whatever, I'm packing at latest 7.30pm and not gonna go anywhere near office on Saturdays and Sundays, haha.
 -
The entire dept had movie night yesterday, on the dept fund's expenses. Watched Transformers 2 - good show, haha. Scant consolation for the usual dept trip I was told... At a point in time, the dept trip was to places like Chiang Mai, and last year, I heard it was Redang. This year - cut. Annual dinner - cut. All the other big 4 must be rubbing their hands in glee - let us do the initial cost cutting measure and then they can follow suit without getting as much bad publicity. Since they did it, now we can follow suit...

I almost forgot how bad KTM is until last Thurs when I had to go to a client's place near KLCC. When driving, we complain of jams, toll, etc. And then when you have to take the train... that's when you start thinking a traffic jam isn't so bad... at least you're in an air-conditioned car and you have your own private space. Jam packed trains, delays, faulty air-conditioning... I wonder why didn't I drive to Kelana Jaya LRT station... ish...

Oh, I finally made my biggest purchase since working - Olympus e-420 twin lens kit plus and additonal external flash. Set me back by RM3k. Quite a good price for a dslr set I reckon. My wallet is really gonna dent when the bill arrives next month... I only managed to charge and test the camera today despite buying it last Wednesday. The perils of working life... haha. I'd be playing with it all day if I was still in uni. Oh well, at least I have the weekend, haha.

Anyway, nothing much to update or rant on about, so, g'nite :)
June 14

It's been long...

Yeah, I know... a month has passed I think... Well, quite a bit happened, but none too significant. Though this very spot may need a name change. It ain't my republic anymore... Dad sold off 22A, so I no longer have a plot of land to call my own in Semenyih any longer... T_T... No more sleeping over as and when I want (or nowadays, if I ever find the time to, haha). But I have absolutely no idea what to name it if I were to change it...so, until some divine inspiration comes along, it stays the Republic of Semenyih.

After some time, you tend to realise. If only audit management practice or go for some HR lessons. Then perhaps, audit won't be a job dreaded by all budding accountants and loathed by all. Just using the simplest theory - Maslow's, it's immediately apparent that although the levels satisfied by audit goes all the way to self actualisation, audit very obviously neglects the very bottom - physiological needs; enough sleep, rest, food, money. Like trying to build the twin towers without piling in any foundations... That's why the turnover rate is probably as high as a fastfood joint, and those who can't take it leave by their first peak season. The audit industry here needs a change... companies are too spoilt. Cheap audit fees and the assumption that auditors will work on weekends... f**king hell... if only there can be a movement or landmark case or legislation that will put the audit firms in court for abusing their staff and violating their own HR policy with regards to working hours and overtime rules... Well, if the late workers are voluntary, fine. Some...sorry, all managers have the bloody cheek to call on weekends and off office hours demanding to see files... Goodness... When I become a senior I swear never to pressure my juniors to stay late or work weekends. Better planning can and will solve the issue... nANd if the manager asks to stay back, too bad, I'm turning off my phone. My bond is for four years, I'm leaving right after. Wanna serve me show cause letter? Go ahead. My appointment letter says 8.30am to 5.30pm, Mon - Fri. See if they dare. Luckily our industrial court favours the more often than not oppressed employees... If there is a change Malaysia needs, it's certainly to employment laws that we need. Otherwise, knowing the way Malaysians don't complain, the competent workers will all just leave...and then where will we be? Don't even get me started on the English passing requirement for SPM issue going on now...the answer is dead obvious (a pass or credit should be mandatory), but as usual, the folks up there are making a big fuss and fanning up racial issues... Well, if our country refuses to accept the international medium of communication and commerce and think we can survive and compete proudly with our national language, then well... that's just a real big shame... I'm ensuring all my children (if I have any...) speak, read and write fluently for their sake.

Ah...enough ranting... I want to enjoy my weekend, haha. Off peak period is the only time we actually get weekends or get to eat dinner at home. Unless you get stuck in never ending shit jobs... well... for now, good day :)

We risk it all...

Yep, auditors are underpaid, worked to the death and face a damn hell lot of risk...Going back at hours when crime happens most, facing drunk drivers and rempits on the highway in the wee hours of the morning, lugging a laptop bag all the time that puts us at target...well, it's actually the data inside that we need to protect the most, but like a snatch thief is going to care or has any avenue for selling corporate info right? We work in occasionally risky industries... Malaysia has confirmed the first porky flu case, and guess what? I'm working in Burger King KLIA for at least the next week... Staring at the influenza virus right there... and we only get lunch allowance of just a measly RM10 a day I think... Knowing the food prices at the damned place, it ain't enough. And best of all, our client runs 13 food and beverage outlets in KLIA, but isn't giving us any free food... haih... I'd like to meet an auditor who is not a director or partner in Malaysia or Singapore that LOVES his/her job and doesn't complain at all... I'll buy lottery with his/her IC no., sure strike...

Well, nice thing is, not being in the PJ office means being able to go off work according to the office staff there (6.30pm) meaning dinner at home (no need to burn another hole for dinner like in 1U). But gotta go back to office tomorrow for a couple of hours to finish off some things...Trust me, peak or no peak, the work never ends... it's just a matter of how much in a rush we are or how many hours we have to work. AND we don't get overtime... yeah, trust me on that one... I dunno about the other 3 big fellas in the industry, but we're getting nuts... The managers have instead just decided to give us all time-offs...At their discretion... How nice it would be to drag these buggers to IR court...oh well, life... G'nite, think of July...July...July... :)

G'nite :)

all said too soon...

Disregard the previous post... I forgot... as an auditor, the word "relax" vanishes as fast as your life and soul... Really said things too fast... because the dept has some staff on leave, so the remaining ones are spread thin and as a result, shitty jobs like *ahem*thedistributorofnissanandrenault*ahem* end up getting shoved onto just 3 people and we have to work like mad again... Common audit stories would be that assistants would get piled with work like vouching (writing down numbers and dates and perusing through documents), stock take (apparently, the shittiest, since you gotta go count physical stock at the warehouses which could be located at some god-forsaken corner of the world), or casting (yeah, even after excel, we still need to count the numbers manually using a calculator...). Me? I dunno... I actually expected all that... It's been 5 months since I joined... haven't been to a single stock take (and since the year ends are mostly over, probably won't be going to one anytime soon), did a fair share of vouching... but I think the most work I've done so far - drafting. Yeah, drafting financial statements... for the past...I dunno... I lost count...I've been looking at financial statements, calling over (or as others would put it, proof-reading), amending drafts, printing drafts, preparing for signing... Makes me feel damn uninformed about how an audit actually starts with a client...because all the jobs I've been to so far are at their end stage, when the financial statements are drafted, checked and prepared for sigining and printing. It sucks if we have to call over an annual report..."the directors capital D s apostrophe comma interests bla bla bla..." Yeah, we actually have to check their wording, spelling and grammar...and alignment too... so yeah, after a few months in audit, you'd get pretty familiarised with the tab and paragraph function in Word...

I'm praying for July... that's when my leaves come, haha. Still haven't got the time off or OT for my first assignment yet... hoping for it to be at least 5 days... My next job is apparently in KLIA... hope there's at least meal allowance for that one, haha. If I have to drive, transport allowance... even better, haha. Yeah, anyway, been reading so many financial statements i think i can soon mouth of the standard wording off the top of my head... So, I shall go now... been seeing to many words and numbers... g'nite :)
